The Sparrow’s Home Reviews the PRIDE Reading Program
Susan, the mama behind the The Sparrow’s Home, reviews the PRIDE Reading Program Reading Comprehension Kit in today’s blog. The self-described “curriculum junkie” has a few favorite features of PRIDE, including:
They model and teach the thinking skills that students who struggle with comprehension need.
The simple pictures and layouts are easy to use.
All aspects of language are involved: reading, writing, listening, speaking. LOVE!
The story that students read has challenging words, unlike many resources I’ve found, providing a great opportunity for vocabulary extension and discussion. (I could do a million things with these stories alone.)
A wide variety of topics.
This former teacher turned homeschooler knows her stuff when it comes to reading curriculum, and one of the most common questions she gets from parents is how to improve their child’s reading comprehension. PRIDE Reading Program is honored and proud to know that Susan recommends the Reading Comprehension Kit to any family with a student who could use some help with this vital skill:
It’s hard to find tools that work on reading comprehension that are not the same old same old. Short passages with comprehension questions (usually multiple choice). As one of my more expressive young clients has expressed…. “BO-ring!”
When I got the PRIDE Reading Comprehension Program Kit I was impressed right off the bat…The book follows a pattern of having students interact with some simple drawings, doing some thinking/talking exercises, some writing, and finally reading and discussing.
