When I first began researching the Orton-Gillingham method over twenty years ago, I realized that it was the right program for my child that had been diagnosed with dyslexia.  Being a teacher, I decided to get myself trained in the Orton-Gillingham program and then homeschool my son so that he would get the right help. Wow, was that not an easy road.

Trying to get Orton-Gillingham training means spending thousands of dollars, flying to a destination far away and having to stay in hotels for weeks at a time!  On top of all that, you still had to devote the rest of your life to ongoing training and supervised visits to be considered Orton-Gillingham “certified.”  Because of these huge obstacles, there are numbers of amazing teachers, homeschooling parents and tutors out there who are not given the opportunity to get the Orton-Gillingham training to help the kids out there in the world who need it.  This is very frustrating.

Orton-Gillingham is an approach.  It is not owned by any one person, organization or publishing company.  Orton-Gillingham is out there for everyone to learn and use.  It is there to help struggling kids with dyslexia, auditory processing, speech deficits and other learning disabilities learn to read, write and spell.  In my opinion, it is the most amazing program out there for these kids..

I developed the PRIDE Reading Program so that every homeschool parent, resource specialist, teacher, tutor, grandparent or older sibling can teach the Orton-Gillingham approach.  You do not need to be an Orton-Gillingham specialist to teach the PRIDE program, you do not need specialized Orton-Gillingham training, you do not need to spend thousands of dollars and you don’t need to devote hundreds of hours of your time.

The PRIDE Reading Program is an easy to follow, step-by-step, multisensory program that utilizes the Orton-Gillingham approach.

It follows all the steps of the Orton-Gillingham approach:

  • Multisensory
  • Language based
  • structured/explicit
  • Sequential
  • Cumulative
  • Systematic
  • Cognitive

Each lesson includes:

  1. Summary and Review using the Sound or Phoneme Cards
  2. Visual, Auditory and Blending Drills
  3. Introducing New Materials
  4. Reading words, sentences and decodable text
  5. Sound and Spelling Dictations
  6. Sight Words
  7. Fluency Drills
  8. Assessments and Games
