Step 1

Hold up the b – balloon

“The name of this letter is b. What is the name of this letter? The letter b is a consonant and it makes the sound /b/. What sound does it make? The picture page for the letter b is balloon. Say balloon. Good. When I point to the picture page, say the letter’s name, give its sound and say the picture word. Watch me as I demonstrate.”  

Say  b, /b/, balloon then have student repeat 3 times.

Step 2

Phonological Awareness

“Close your eyes. I will say a word. You will repeat the word and listen for the /b/ sound at the beginning of the word. If you hear /b/ at the beginning of the word, raise your hand. Let’s practice. Say bat. Do you hear the /b/ sound at the beginning of the word bat? Yes, you hear the /b/ sound at the beginning of the word bat so you raise your hand. Good. Let’s practice some more words.”  

Repeat this activity with:

bird, bench, butterfly, cat, bus, book, hug, bath, lap, baseball

Step 3

Finger Tracing

Say “Point to the letter b inside the balloon. What sound does it make? Good. Notice that the letter b is two spaces tall. Let’s trace the letter b with our finger. Point to the number 1. Follow the stroke down with your finger. Now move your finger back up to the number 2 and follow that line.” Have student repeat 3 times.

“What is the name of this letter? What sound does it make?” 

Step 4

Guess My Word Game

Say “I am thinking of something that starts with the letter b and that you buckle around your waist to hold up your pants. What is it?” (belt)

“Great! Now it’s your turn to think of something that starts with the letter b and I have to guess it.”

Say “I am thinking of something that starts with the letter b and birds live in it.” (birdhouse)

“Great! Now it’s your turn to think of something that starts with the letter b and I have to guess it.” 

Say “I am thinking of something that starts with the letter b and people like to sit on it at the park.” (bench)

 “Great! Now it’s your turn to think of something that starts with the letter b and I have to guess it.”

Pictures with Beginning Sounds

“Look at the first picture. It is a picture of a bus. Point to the bus. Point to the word under the picture. The word says bus. Circle the b in the beginning of the word bus. What sound does the b make in the word bus?”

“Look at the next picture. It is a picture of a belt. Point to the belt. Point to the word under the picture. The word says belt. Circle the b in the beginning of the word belt. What sound does the b make in the word belt?”

“Look at the next picture. It is a picture of a basket. Point to the basket. Point to the word under the picture. The word says basket. Circle the b in the beginning of the word basket. What sound does the b make in the word basket?”
